Content writing rates in India
Content writing in India is priced three ways — per word, per piece and per month — and the same writer can quote very differently across the three. Knowing what each model is buying matters more than any single rate.
Typical rates
₹0.50–₹10 per word
typical per-word rate quoted by freelance content writers in India
That is a published range, not our own data, and it is wide on purpose: the bottom is bulk, lightly researched copy and the top is specialist writing in fields like finance, health or technical B2B. Most published guides agree on that spread, though few say how they measured it — so treat it as a map of the market rather than a quote. As projects complete on Lancerscape, this page will add the range observed on the platform, labelled separately.
The three ways writers price
Per word
The most common model for articles and web copy. Easy to compare, but it rewards length — agree a word range so a piece is not padded to fit.
Per piece
A fixed price for a defined deliverable — a product page, a case study, a set of emails. Better when the value is in the thinking rather than the length.
Per month
A retainer for a steady volume, often with planning and editing included. Cheaper per piece, and a commitment on both sides.
What moves the rate
- Research depth. A piece built from interviews or primary sources takes far longer than one rewritten from the first page of search results.
- Subject expertise. Finance, law, healthcare and technical B2B writing need knowledge a generalist does not have, and are priced for it.
- SEO work. Keyword research, structure and on-page optimisation are separate skills from writing, and some writers include them while others do not.
- Edits and approvals. Each round of revision and each extra approver adds time to every piece.
- Turnaround. A piece needed tomorrow costs more than the same piece next week.
How to compare quotes
Quotes only compare when they price the same job. State the word range, the audience, whether keywords and sources are supplied, how many rounds of edits are included, and who owns the finished work. Our guide to writing a project brief covers the rest.
On Lancerscape, posting a brief is free, KYC-verified writers bid on it, and you contract with a registered Indian company that stands behind delivery. Post a writing brief. If you write for a living, find writing projects — applying is free.
FAQ
How much do content writers charge per word in India?
Published guides put it at ₹0.50–₹10 per word, according to Xflow, “Freelancer Charges in India 2026” (28 September 2026). The low end is bulk copy with little research; the high end is specialist writing. Your quote depends on research depth, subject expertise, SEO work and turnaround.
Should I pay a content writer per word or per article?
Per word suits defined pieces where length is a fair proxy for effort. Per article suits work where the value is in research or thinking rather than length. For a steady volume, a monthly retainer is usually cheaper per piece.
Why do content writing quotes vary so much?
Because research depth, subject expertise and SEO work change the job far more than word count does. Two quotes for “a 1,000-word blog post” are often pricing two different pieces of work. A precise brief narrows them.
Who owns the content once it is written?
It should be agreed in writing. On Lancerscape, the rights pass to you when you pay the project invoice, unless something different is agreed in writing — clause 8 of our terms.
Does it cost anything to post a writing brief on Lancerscape?
No. Posting a brief and comparing bids are free. You are invoiced the value of the bid you accept, as one GST invoice in rupees.
