Upwork alternatives in India
If you are hiring freelancers from India, or freelancing from India, the practical differences between platforms are rarely about features. They are about who you end up in a contract with, what currency you get paid in, and what it costs you to take part at all.
General information, not professional advice. Rules and commercial terms change — check the current position before relying on this. Last reviewed .
Upwork is the default. It is large, it works, and for a business hiring across several countries at once it is a reasonable place to start. Most people searching for an alternative are not searching because it is bad. They are searching because something about it does not fit how they actually work.
This page sets out where the friction usually is for Indian businesses and Indian freelancers, and how Lancerscape is built differently. Where a difference is a matter of preference rather than a matter of fact, we have said so.
Who your contract is actually with
This is the difference that matters most and gets discussed least.
On a conventional marketplace, the platform introduces you to a freelancer and then steps back. Your agreement is with that individual. The platform provides payment protection and a dispute process, but the party who owes you the work is a person you have never met, often in another jurisdiction. If the work does not arrive, your recourse runs through the platform first and then, in principle, through that individual.
Lancerscape is a principal, not an introducer. The contract for your project is between you and Lancerscape Global Pvt Ltd, a company registered with the Registrar of Companies in Chennai since 2020. We contract the freelancer separately and pay them on successful completion. If the work is not delivered to brief, your counterparty is a registered Indian company that you can hold to it — not an individual freelancer.

A conventional marketplace
- Introduces you to a freelancer, then steps back
- Your agreement is with that individual
- Recourse runs through the platform, then through a person
- The party who owes you the work is someone you have never met
Lancerscape
- Contracts with you directly as principal
- Your agreement is with Lancerscape Global Pvt Ltd
- We contract and pay the freelancer separately
- A registered Indian company is answerable for delivery
What it costs to take part
On most large marketplaces, a freelancer submits a proposal by spending Connects — credits bought in advance. Applying costs money whether or not anyone replies. For an established freelancer with steady repeat clients this is a rounding error. For someone building a client base, it is a real tax on the exact activity they need to do most.
On Lancerscape, posting a project is free and applying to one is free. There are no connects, no credits and no subscription tier. A freelancer who applies to twenty projects and wins none has spent nothing.
The commercial terms that apply when a project is actually awarded are being finalised and will be published on this page and on our pricing page before they take effect. We would rather leave this section incomplete than publish a number we might change.
Currency, invoices and the finance team
Global platforms operate in dollars by default. For an Indian business that means a currency conversion on every engagement, a foreign transaction on the card statement, and an invoice that your finance team has to reason about. None of it is insurmountable. All of it is friction, repeated every single time.
Priced in rupees
Projects are quoted, invoiced and paid in INR. No conversion on the way in or out.
A GST invoice
Issued by an Indian company in the format your accountant already processes.
Paid to an Indian bank
Freelancers are paid in rupees, with no international transfer in the middle.
Your timezone
Support, and the people accountable for your project, work the hours you do.
If your team hires globally and already has a process for foreign invoices, this changes little. If you are an Indian business whose finance function has pushed back on freelance spend before, it is often the whole argument.
Where Upwork is still the better answer
We would rather tell you this than have you find out after signing up.
- You need talent in a specific country outside India. Our supply is Indian. A global marketplace has genuinely global reach and we do not.
- You want to hire a long-term contractor and manage them directly, with hourly tracking and your own management overhead. We are built around defined projects with a defined deliverable.
- You already have a roster of freelancers you trust on another platform. There is no good reason to move a working relationship.
- You need scale today across dozens of simultaneous engagements. We are a younger marketplace and our depth in any one skill is smaller.
A global marketplace optimises for breadth. We optimise for one project delivered, with someone accountable for it.
Why this market exists at all
Freelancing in India stopped being a side activity some time ago, and the infrastructure around it has not entirely caught up.
12.0M
gig workers in India (FY25), up from 7.7M in FY21 — over 2% of the total workforce
~38%
annual growth in project-based hiring
Most of that activity is still contracted informally — a WhatsApp thread, a UPI transfer, and no paperwork on either side. That works until it does not. The gap Lancerscape is built for is the one between an informal arrangement and a full agency engagement: a real contract, a real invoice, and somebody answerable, without the cost of an agency in the middle.
FAQ
Is Lancerscape cheaper than Upwork?
Posting a project and applying to one are both free — there is no listing fee and no connects to buy. The commercial terms that apply when a project is awarded are being finalised, and we will publish them here and on our pricing page before they take effect rather than quote a number we might change.
Can I hire freelancers outside India on Lancerscape?
No. Our freelancer base is Indian, and projects are priced and paid in rupees. If you need talent in a specific country outside India, a global marketplace is the better tool for that job.
What happens if the freelancer does not deliver?
Your contract is with Lancerscape Global Pvt Ltd, not with the freelancer, so the obligation to deliver sits with us. If the work is not delivered to brief, we make it right. The freelancer relationship is ours to manage, not yours to chase.
Do I get a GST invoice?
Yes. You are invoiced by an Indian registered company in rupees, with GST, in the format your finance team already processes. No foreign currency conversion and no international transaction.
Do freelancers pay to apply?
No. There are no connects, no credits and no subscription. A freelancer can apply to as many projects as they like at no cost, and is paid in rupees directly to an Indian bank account on approved delivery.
